Glossary

Terms used around WattFund projects

Short definitions so owners, providers and investors can use the same language. Not a legal dictionary.

Behind-the-Meter
Generation or storage that sits on the customer’s side of the electricity meter, usually to serve on-site demand. Different from a standalone asset that trades primarily with the network.
BESSBattery storage project
Battery Energy Storage System. A battery installation that stores electricity and discharges it later — behind a meter, co-located with generation, or as a standalone grid-connected asset.
Capex
Capital expenditure. The upfront cost to build or install the project. Distinct from opex, which is the ongoing cost to run it.
CPO
Charge Point Operator. A company that owns or operates EV charge points, often including hardware, software, maintenance and customer access. Different from an installer, who delivers the physical works.
Destination Charging
Charging provided where people already spend time — hotels, retail, leisure — rather than only as a rapid roadside stop. Dwell time is part of the project description.
DNO
Distribution Network Operator. The company that runs the local electricity network. Grid connection, export and capacity conversations typically involve the DNO or an independent equivalent.
EPC
Engineering, Procurement and Construction. A delivery contractor that designs, buys and installs a project against a defined scope. An EPC quotation is a delivery cost, not an investment offer.
Feasibility
Early technical and commercial testing: is the site, grid, building or use case capable of supporting the project being described? Feasibility can precede costing; it is not a quote.
Fleet Charging
Charging infrastructure for an organisation’s own vehicles, often at a depot. The binding questions are usually power, dwell window and install cost, not public utilisation.
Grid Connection
The arrangement that lets a project take power from, or export power to, the electricity network. Timing, capacity and cost of connection are often the binding constraint on storage and generation projects.
Heat PumpCommercial heat project
A system that moves heat using electricity rather than burning fuel on site. On WattFund, commercial heat pump projects are treated as building and energy-system work: demand, temperatures, electrical capacity, costing and delivery — not a domestic product listing.
Investment Opportunity
A project presented for capital review. Public examples on WattFund are currently illustrative and are not open investment offers. Live opportunities are introduced through the platform when reviewed.
Opex
Operating expenditure. Ongoing costs such as maintenance, software, network charges or land. A costing conversation should say whether a figure is capex, opex, or both.
PPA
Power Purchase Agreement. A contract to buy or sell electricity from a project over a period. Whether a PPA exists, and on what terms, is a commercial fact to be stated — not assumed.
Project Costing
A delivery estimate from people who can do the work, based on a stated scope. WattFund does not generate a price. Costing is different from feasibility, which tests whether an idea holds.
Project Finance
A way of funding a project where lenders or investors look primarily at the project’s cash flows and contracts rather than only at the sponsor’s balance sheet. It is one possible structure, not a default product WattFund sells.
Project Owner
The person or organisation that controls, or is originating, an energy project or site. On WattFund this includes businesses, landowners, developers and others who need costing, capital or delivery support.
Project Request
A structured request raised from a project — for example costing, technical input or a delivery partner — so relevant providers can respond against a brief rather than a vague enquiry.
Public Charging
EV charge points intended for general use, typically with public access, payment and an operator. Different from workplace or depot chargers used mainly by one organisation.
Service Opportunity
A project requirement that service providers can review and propose against. It is work to be priced and delivered, not an investment offer.
Service Provider
A contractor or specialist that can cost, design, install or otherwise deliver work against a project requirement. Visibility on WattFund follows stated capability, not purchased leads.
